This course focuses on foundational principles of community work from a locality development approach. Historical and theory based perspectives on community capacity building, social capital, power and resources will draw upon learning from the Antigonish movement and community economic development models. Methods of engaging citizens in the change process will include examples from popular education and social learning approaches with a focus on critical pedagogy using Friere's pioneering work on literacy. Students will acquire practice based skills for community engagement and techniques for root cause analysis, empowering and building community resources.
