Bachelor of Community Development NEW

Credential: Honours Degree Program Code: CD411 Length: 8 semesters

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:

  • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
  • Five Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above

  • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent



All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.


Mature Applicants

An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older (21 or older for degree programs) as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U level or equivalent.

College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber will use your college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

University Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber will use your university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

Selection: Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Our Program

Humber’s Bachelor of Community Development degree program offers you in-depth study and application of community development principles strongly grounded in the theory, principles and practices of locality development, community mobilization, leadership and social action, while exploring psychological and sociological influences.

The first year of the program is comprised of a common platform of courses that includes psychology, sociology, human rights, interpersonal communication, counselling and ethics. The second year of study immerses students in the field of community development including foundational courses which explore leadership and advocacy. The final two years of the program provide in-depth study of program development and evaluation, advanced issues in community development, social movements, community participatory research, and senior thesis work. Project work is linked to applied and academic fields.

Courses will be presented using lectures, tutorials, seminar groups, labs, case studies, visiting professionals, demonstrations and independent research.

Courses Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Compare and contrast different historical and contemporary approaches, theory, values and methods of community work.

  • Investigate psycho/social, economic and political theory underpinning community work.

  • Analyze social structures that marginalize people by race, gender, class, sexual orientation and ability.

  • Analyze community strengths, assets, complexities and resources from an empowerment perspective.

  • Analyze root causes of community problems and select appropriate intervention strategies for change.

  • Evaluate gaps in services and resources within communities applying participatory research methods that involve community members.

  • Compose, present and evaluate action plans with measurable outcomes tied to empowerment evaluation methodology.

  • Critique legislation and social policies and create alternative viewpoints that support communities in positive ways.

  • Advocate on behalf of communities arguing for change that focuses on identified community needs.

  • Devise organizational structures that support and enable community action plans to be implemented successfully.

  • Formulate, implement and evaluate plans to access sustainable resources and concrete benefits for communities.

  • Critique community development literature and cases to determine best practices in the field.

  • Network with community members and organizations to mobilize citizens and develop allies for the change process.

  • Facilitate communities through training, education and social learning to build capacity, create leaders and engage human resources.

  • Apply interpersonal and group skills to plan and facilitate discussions that build collaborative relationships and community partnerships.

  • Acknowledge the limits of knowledge in the field of community development through academic writing and professional practices in working with others from diverse disciplines to provide holistic services to communities.

  • Practice leadership and adult education principles to contribute to approaches to community development that result in social justice.

  • Deliver professional services based on ethical guidelines and empowerment centred values within the scope of practice.

  • Manage own self-care and ongoing professional development plan using self-reflection and community feedback to target areas for skills, knowledge and attitude growth.


Work Placement

Students will participate in one mandatory 14-week work term. The placement may be in a social service, community, educational or non-profit organization where students will have an opportunity to work in the community development field. During their work placement, students may have a variety of responsibilities including assessment, research-based work, working directly with community groups and individuals, as well as supporting community workers, educators and/or social science professionals.

With the assistance of the SSCS International Co-ordinator, students also have the option to gain cross-cultural knowledge and experience by completing this placement abroad. Students can put theory to practice and directly engage with communities across the globe that will benefit from community development work. Common Platform Advantage

Two common semesters between the Community Development and Criminal Justice Degree programs give students the chance to develop a broader understanding of courses with flexibility to move between degree options before year two.

Employers in the field of community development have identified the need for degree-level training. There is both an economic need and a social need for highly educated Community Development professionals in the current Ontario landscape. The Humber degree program meets these needs. Class projects often include a service learning component whereby students engage with community and reflect upon these interactions.

There will be practice based projects such as:

  • Creating a community map - Going out into priority communities to identify hubs, hang-outs, resources - community centres, social services, health services, recreation centres, schools, faith based organizations, etc.
  • Facilitating community meetings
  • Working at the Centre for Transformative Change helping to start new community projects
  • Staging a rally or demonstration to bring attention to important issues
  • Organizing campus wide events to engage other students in social issues
  • Creating community film
  • Putting together public relations packages
  • Writing a response or brief in reaction to proposed legislation or social policy
  • Creating a community project from scratch and writing a funding proposal
  • Undertaking a community based research project

Moot Court Room

Counselling Labs

Counselling labs enable students to practice and videotape counselling skills in a counseling room setting. Two way mirror enables other students and faculty to observe sessions and offer feedback in a non-intrusive manner.

Moot Court

Our in-house court in the Centre for Justice Studies enables students to role plan and simulate real court proceedings. This offers students a greater understanding of court proceedings and the justice system.

Group/Pod Classrooms

Humber's Pod classrooms are now the prototype for a new type of classroom, trading rows of traditional desks for small tables and colourful, movable chairs grouped into “pods” around the room. Each pod is clustered around a large display screen and a whiteboard, allowing students to easily work in small groups. A smart board at the front of the room enables professors to give instructions, show videos or answer questions from the class. Plus, there are more than 20 outlets – most of them embedded in the tables.
