Child and Youth Worker

Diploma

Overview

We have recently seen an increased emphasis on the importance of Child and Youth Workers in the province of Ontario. Ontario government budget highlights included “increased investment in...youth workers. Colleges will become the instrument...related to training.” As well, the renowned James Lonnee inquest, where a young man was shunted from home to home and to eventual death, resulted in 119 recommendations for changes to the social climate relating to youth care. One of these very clearly states that “staff classifications should be changed...to Youth Workers to better reflect the unique nature of their work.” Moreover, “all aspects of corrections, administrative structure, system delivery and staffing should have a youth-centred orientation”.

In this context, the Child and Youth Worker program at Humber prepares men and women to work with children and adolescents (from 4 to 18 years of age) and their families. Whether in group homes or treatment centres, schools or hospitals, students will learn to work with young people who display withdrawal, depression, violence, have learning disabilities, and family conflicts. Students will learn how to put young people first. Child and Youth Work provides a career path that is very challenging and rewarding.
