Lakeshore Campus
Four Semesters
September start date
This program prepares students for a career in the correctional sector of the criminal justice system. This program focuses on careers in community and institutional correctional services.
In combining both theory and applied skills, students will receive the breadth of knowledge and experience required to ensure that they are able to meet the demands of an entry-level position in this field. Students will be prepared for occupations in which they will work with offenders and other high-risk client groups. They will explore the development of community programs, restorative justice initiatives and preventative measures. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on the practice of interpersonal, problem solving and assessment skills.
The program is delivered by skilled and committed faculty with current, real-life work experience within community and institutional corrections. As a result, the program boasts strong community linkages. Additionally, specialized training is delivered by experts who are current in their fields.
Opportunities are provided within the curriculum to broaden students’ understanding of the criminal justice role within the community-at-large. There is a comprehensive field placement component (two days per week in semesters 3 and 4) which provides students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in a supervised field placement. This experience is integral to preparing students for work in the corrections field. The nature of environments and the diversity of clientele in this field demand a highly trained workforce able to intervene effectively using best practices, in order to ensure the protection of the public, and the safety of the community, staff, and clients.
This state-of-the-art facility is designed to give you the edge. Develop your skills in the forensic studio, simulated crime scenes, mock interview rooms and view your classmates 'at work' in the overhead viewing theatre and critique their performance, creep through a simulated crime scene from the viewing theatre. The mock crime scene apartment is one of the new newest labs built at Humber's Lakeshore Campus. See how it all works through our Interactive Crime Scene Lab.
