Humber’s Protection, Security and Investigation diploma program gives you the skills needed to attract employers’ attention in the growing public safety and private security fields.
You will learn from industry experts in Humber’s 18,000-square-foot Centre for Justice Leadership which features the latest technology-based learning in crime scene management and criminal investigation, along with justice leadership and conflict resolution learning opportunities.
Small classes enhance courses designed to meet current needs and integrate theory with practical learning experiences. Courses include Investigative Interviewing, Border Security in Canada, Conflict Resolution, Surveillance Techniques and Crime Analysis. You will learn how to use protection, security and investigation techniques and technologies to accurately monitor, assess and document behaviours, situations and events; and to collect, preserve and present admissible evidence. You will also learn public relations skills, how to resolve conflicts and how to act justly when working with diverse populations. Students may be subject to security clearance screening requirements including a criminal record and background check.
This program is designed to meet both public and private sector demand for graduates who have expertise in protection, security and investigation, as well as a strong knowledge of the criminal and civil justice systems in Canada.

Graduates with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 65 percent or higher may be considered for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice degree program. Advanced standing allows for completing the degree in 3 years rather than the usual 4 years. Advanced standing students complete the degree with the equivalent of six semesters of full-time study plus two, eight-week work terms.
Effective September 2017, the content of our Private Investigator Licensing (Exam) Prep Course will be incorporated into the curriculum of the Protection, Security and Investigation program at Humber. This course is also available to alumni and students who entered the program prior to fall 2017. However, fees will apply.
Students and alumni from our Protection, Security and Investigation program are eligible to take the Security Guard Licensing (Exam) Prep course offered at Humber as well.
These prep courses are available through our Continuing Education department and prepare students to write the Ministry exams which are mandatory for private investigators and security guards in Ontario.
At the heart of the Criminal Justice programs lies the Humber Centre for Justice Leadership, a state-of-the-art building designed to take education above and beyond the classroom.
Mentor with some of the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA’s) leading security providers. Mentorship opportunities subject to specific requirements, availability and eligibility criteria set by Humber College, the mentorship provider.
Fourth-semester PSI students who meet academic-related selection criteria are eligible to participate in the PSI Job Shadow Program. Students in this program shadow security professionals in the field, gaining valuable insights into the day-to-day operations of private and public security organizations, and making critical professional networking connections.
The crime scene lab in the Humber Centre for Justice Leadership is a state-of-the-art crime scene studio and forensic lab that offers innovative facilities. Students will utilize the simulation lab for processing forensic evidence from staged crime scenes including taking photos, collecting and protecting evidence, and sketching and measuring the scene.

A Humber Protection, Security and Investigation diploma can also lead to fulfilling and productive careers in the public safety sector including employment with border security organizations such as Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA); police and in telli gence agencies; correctional services; immigration agencies; municipal, provincial and federal government agencies; the Canadian Forces; and municipal bylaw enforcement agencies.
