FILM RELEASE OF THE DOCUMENTARY 'REGENT PARK'

June 22, 2018

On Thursday February 8, SSCS hosted the launch of the documentary “Regent Park,” a film developed under the leadership of Police Foundations Professor Arun Dhanota with support from the Centre for Teaching and Learning, coupled with a range of community partners. The documentary is based on a young person named Martin and his journey through the youth criminal justice system. The film highlights how systemic issues may have contributed to the tragic death of Martin on the streets of Toronto. Martin was a client of Ms. Dhanota’s during her work in the field as a counsellor, and this case inspired her to create this documentary for students. The film will be used as the foundation for a case study style education being delivered in various police foundations courses. Ms. Dhanota’s personal connection with Martin that students will experience during the case study brings an element of realism supporting the applied learning model of the Police Foundations program. Regent Park’s first screening was showcased in front of community partners who were involved in Martin’s case, as well as students, faculty, administration, and offered them the opportunity to meet the people who worked with Martin and helped to implement this film into the Police Foundations curriculum.
