This course focuses on dynamics of conflict, stress, and the interaction between conflict and stress. Students will be introduced to the concepts and practices of resolving conflict within the criminal justice context. Students will learn to apply conflict-resolution principles at the individual and institutional levels. Particular emphasis will be placed on conflict deescalation and the 'use of force' model. An extensive study of stress indicators, the negative impact of stress on human health, and stress-reduction techniques to assist in dealing with personal and work stressors will also be undertaken. This will include a look at the Occupational Health and Safety guidelines in Canada as well as case studies demonstrating how stress affects members of the law enforcement, security and military communities.
