Meet new members of the Faculty of Social and Community Services.

This summer, FSCS faculty member Dr. Doug Thomson, and Associate Dean of Research & Development, Dr. Emma Smith, were awarded the Humber President’s Research Award.

In June 2023, Humber supported four Bachelor of Behavioural Science (BBS) students to attend a conference “A Comprehensive and Compassionate Approach for Addressing Problem Behaviour.”

FSCS students and staff attended the fifth annual fundraiser in support of The Gatehouse, which took place at the Liberty Grand on Oct 5th, 2023.

Protection, Security & Investigation (PSI) faculty Kerry Watkins, was a panelist at the Challenges of Introducing Science-Based Interviewing Methods into Police Practice event.

Instructor Peter Gendi is thrilled to share the captivating moments of teaching students in the Forensic Identification (FI) program the art of examining various surfaces for fingerprints.

Congratulations to Melanie Zuzarte, who received a Child and Youth Care Practioner Excellence Award from the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care.

Another successful Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) took place in September, with students in the Bachelor of Addictions & Mental Health (BAMH) program at FSCS.

An exciting three-part Global Speaker Webinar was held for students in justice programs at the FSCS.

During the spring and summer of 2023, Humber’s Centre for Social Innovation supported the eighth growing season for the GARDENS Project – a partnership with LAMP Community Health Centre.

Congratulations to Bachelor of Community Development (CDEV) graduate Lisa Post, who was nominated for the 2023 Premier’s Award.

Sevval Ogutcu graduated from the Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice (CJ) program in April 2023. Sevval describes her experience at Humber College as fulfilling and remarkable.

Izabella graduated from Humber in April 2023 from the Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice (CJ) Program.

The Humber College Motorola Foundation’s First Response Camp ran for its inaugural session in July 2023.

The Lakeshore library reopened its doors on October 30th.

This September, Humber College conducted their annual Active Attacker Drills.

The Wellness Series, hosted by the Principal’s Office, returned this semester with two keynote speakers.

The fourth annual New Toronto Holiday Market returned on Saturday, November 25 at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre!

“The Gingerbread Express” rolled into Lakeshore Campus on November 25th, for this year’s Humber Holiday Party!

Grace: One Story of Thousands is a brand-new exhibition presented by the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre in their main-floor gallery.

With the increased presence of learners on campus, the Interpretive Centre is excited to share that over 1,400 students, staff, and community are participating in historical tours this semester!

Humber’s Forensic Identification program hosted the annual recovery of surface-scattered remains lab in collaboration with various community partners.

On February 6th, the FSCS officially welcomed Francis Syms into his new role as Associate Dean of Continuous Professional Learning (CPL).

The Toronto Police Services Rovers Crew hosted the Annual Investiture Ceremony in March.

Humber’s Men’s Curling team made up of five players and coached by student Zack Shurtleff qualified for the Canadian College.

Police Foundations (PFP) professor, Rebecca Finlay, recently published a new textbook titled “Fitness and Lifestyle/Fit For Duty”.

Criminal Justice faculty member, Soheila Pashang, recently co-published a new chapter in Cultures of Silence: The Power of Untold Narratives.

The fifth annual Peel Regional Police (PRP) FIT challenge was a way for PRP to highlight their relationship with local GTHA Colleges.

Natasha Stasiuk is in the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) program. She has been playing golf since she was 8 years old.

Kennith James Skwleqs Robertson, known by many as Ken Robertson, is a student in the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) Program.

On April 5th, we had the pleasure of hosting a movie night for the screening of STEADFAST: The Messenger and the Message.

The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre will be hosting a brand-new exhibition: Florals, Naturally featuring the paintings of Courtney Carstens.

This exciting partnership will enable applied research initiatives to drive validation and adoption of new DNA technology in forensics.

We are excited to announce that SSW faculty member, Michele Choma has been selected to participate in the Inclusivity Committee at the OCSWSSW.

Dr. Pashang has recently been appointed to the board of directors for the OASW.

Four BBS students had the opportunity to attend one-day of the annual conference of the Ontario Association for Behaviour Analysis in early December.

At the annual conference of the ONTABA, two students in the Humber Bachelor of Behavioural Science (BBS) won awards!

We were thrilled to host five exchange students at the FSCS in Fall 2022.

This summer, all Humber students have the opportunity to study abroad and take courses for Humber academic elective credit or CCR experience.

On Saturday, June 4, 2022, we excitedly welcomed students back to the Lakeshore Campus for our Experience Humber Event.

Humber College had a strong presence in the 2022 Ontario College Fair, which took place October 19th and October 20th

Our annual Fall Open House event will take place on Saturday, November 12th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Lakeshore Campus.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the 6th Annual Alexandre Boucher Memorial Lecture is an event held in memory of Alexandre Boucher, a Criminal Justice Degree student.

Humber Fall 2022 in-person convocation ceremonies will be on November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. for the Faculty of Social and Community Services (FSCS) at the Toronto Congress Centre (North Building).

On Saturday, October 1st a group of FSCS faculty, staff and students attended the A.B.L.E. 30th Anniversary Scholarship and Awards Gala.

Professor Kerry Watkins, of the Protection, Security and Investigation program, had his 2016 article from Criminal Law Quarterly cited twice in a Supreme Court of Canada decision.

On September 14, the Faculty of Social and Community Services (FSCS) sponsored 5 students to attend the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Congratulations to the 22 Division Toronto Police Services Rover crew who received an award at LAMP’s 22nd Awards of Merit on June 22, 2022.

Professor Everton Lewis taught a new class to our Bachelor of Community Development students this year, titled “Anti-Black Racism: Critical Theory and Practice”.

Humber’s annual Active Attacker Drill aims at testing safety procedures and ensure community members know how to respond in the unlikely event of an active attacker on campus.

This summer, Humber students were able to travel abroad again for the first time since the pandemic.

The Faculty of Social and Community Services (FSCS) aare excited to have welcomed incoming exchange students again for the first time since before the pandemic.

A total of 146 students from around the world enrolled in Humber’s Global Summer School which ran in-person this year.

Criminal Justice students at Humber participated in a COIL project with our academic partner University of West Indies (UWI) - Jamaica Bachelor of Criminal Justice and Master of Criminology programs.

After over two years of travel restrictions limiting mobility opportunities for students, we are excited that in-person study abroad programs have returned!

This semester, while in-person classes, activities and other opportunities resumed, at FSCS, we continued to offer many global learning opportunities virtually.

Virtual study abroad opportunities at our partner institution in Japan, Kansai Gaidai University (KGU) are still being offered this semester, for Humber students.

This Fall, two COILs are running, in partnership with two of our academic partners in Denmark – UCL University College, and UC Absalon.

On October 25, a Global Speaker Webinar brought together a specialist in Canada and the Netherlands on the topic of Working with Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities: Supports & Interventions.

Emergency response to mental health calls has recently gained attention, recognizing that these interactions may have substantial, potentially life and death consequences for those in distress.

Students from the Protection, Security and Investigation (PSI) program are eligible for the Toronto Crime Stoppers scholarship, which awards one student annually for outstanding leadership.

The GARDENS Project is a collaboration between LAMP Community Health Centre and Humber College, with oversight by the GARDENS Advisory Council (GAC).

From the new Friendlier reusable container pilot to the introduction of Birch Bark Coffee from Indigenous Fair-Trade roasters, our campus continues to make strides towards a more eco-friendly future.

The Humber Lakeshore Grounds have been a popular setting for films, TV shows, and commercials since the late 1970s.

To support sustainable, Indigenous and interactive outdoor education the Lakeshore Principal’s Office has purchased a set of 50 foam sit-upons, which can be used to establish an outdoor classroom.

On October 1st the Lakeshore Campus welcomed upwards of 10,000 visitors during our first ever Nuit Blanche event. Nuit Blanche is a city-wide exhibition featuring art projects from various artists.

The Humber Lakeshore Principal’s Office and Humber Lakeshore Athletics were excited to host our Annual Moving for Mental Health Awareness Event again for the first time since 2019.

Did you know there are currently over 1,000 Canadian patients waiting for a stem cell match? To assist, Humber partnered with the Canadian Blood Services to host our first Stem Cell Swabbing Event.

Humber Faculty and Staff joined us on October 24th from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the BMO Commons for our Wellness Talk. This month’s wellness talk was facilitated by speaker and comedian Kate Davis.

As we welcomed our learners back to campus this September, many of them joined the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre on tour.

The Office of the Principal and Humber Lakeshore Athletics teamed up to form and execute the inaugural Stepping into Spring Challenge.

The GARDENS Project is an organization that works to support food security through community engagement in South Etobicoke.

Since launching in 2019, over 400 students from 45 different academic programs, 33 academic institutions and 35 countries worldwide have participated.

The Bachelors Program in Child and Youth Care offered an innovative course in Disability and Child and Youth Care for the first time in Fall 2021.

Students in the Forensic Identification (FI) Post Graduate program have been participating in some exciting labs on campus this semester.

As part of Humber’s Professional Development policy, staff can take advantage of a variety of funded courses, at a reduced tuition cost of only $20.

After 15 years, Humber’s Orangeville campus closed its doors in Summer 2021, but memories from it will live on.

Bachelor of Behavioural Science community partners continue to engage Humber students through virtual and on-site Work-Integrated Learning experiences

The WIL Centre aims to provide students with the resources and tools they need to feel prepared beginning their Field Experience.

From March 4 to March 7, Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) held its 46th annual conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Humber’s Global Summer School (GSS) is happening again this summer – with plans of hosting the program in person!

This Winter semester, KGU once again offered Humber students an opportunity to take a class remotely there as a virtual exchange student. 

Humber’s FSCS launched a Social Innovation Survey to support the development of the CSI, which will be housed at the Lakeshore campus.

Humber College is the second top research college in the country, according to rankings released by Research InfoSource Inc.

Dr. Soheila Pashang, faculty in the Social and & Community Services (FSCS), has taught and researched the topic of social justice for many years. 

PFP Program Coordinator, Arun Dhanota, co-authored the Fifth edition of the textbook Ethics in Criminal Justice and Public Safety.

The skills and techniques that I learned in the FI program are extremely important to my success in my role as a Scenes of Crime Specialist.

I’ve always wanted to work in forensics and was blown away with the amount of hands-on experience we were given by industry professionals.

After graduating from U of T, having taken forensic classes during my BSc, I wanted to learn more, and Humber’s FI program felt like a perfect fit.

Juan Bendaña, speaker, author, and DJ, spoke at the 5th Annual Alexandre Boucher Memorial Lecture, which was held virtually on November 4, 2021.

On October 27th the FSCS held a professional development talk for staff, focusing on burnout and stress management. 

Bachelor of Child and Youth Care (B-CYC) student Sarah Simpson was selected as a Civic Action DiverseCity Fellow for her leadership.

Fall 2021 has been a busy semester for the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) program!

In late September, Bachelor of Behavioural Science faculty Dr. Tami Rankin, organized an inaugural research event for BBS grads and 4th year students.

It’s been both an exciting time of re-building partnerships impacted by COVID-19, and a challenging time to find ways for students and partners.

Our community partners have been exceptional as we continuously navigate to changing COVID-19 circumstances.

The FSCS Career Mentorship Program is turning 2!

For the second year in a row, International Education Week (IEW) was held virtually from November 15-28, 2021. 

On November 24, 2021, the FSCS hosted a Global Speaker Webinar (GSW) event in partnership with our academic partner, Saxion University.

Humber has won two contracts under the GSO fund, which provides bursaries for low-income Canadian students. 

Faculty of Social and Community Services has launched a Social Innovation Survey to support the development of Humber’s Centre of Social Innovation.

Child and Youth Care instructor, Wolfgang Vachon, with help from Shaheen Ariefdien, created a research-based fiction podcast as part of his PhD.

Humber’s Harm Reduction Partnership Working group hosted a discussion event for faculty and staff to learn about cannabis legalization in Canada.

Due Process – The Interviews, is a podcast that examines Canada’s Criminal Justice System. 

Steve Ursel is conducting a study with Dr. Craig Rivera of Niagara University, on law-enforcement pre-employment polygraph testing.

Daniel Schwartz, PSI program faculty and Program Coordinator, has co-authored the book Crime and Intelligence Analysis in Canada.

On November 4, 2021 eCampusOntario released its call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the Second Round of funding in support VLS.

Tasmine joined Humber’s Social Services Worker (SSW) program after realizing she had a passion for helping others find strength and resilience.

JD Marchand, Class of ‘96 at Humber’s then Law and Security Administration program, was CBSA’s first Aboriginal Liaison Officer.

FSCS Police Foundations Program (PFP) graduate, Jeffrey Haskins, was recently appointed as Cobourg Police Deputy Chief.

Baldev Mutta, CEO/founder of Punjabi Community Health Services is a recipient of this year’s Premier’s Award under the category of Community Services.

On December 6th, the Office of the Principal, Lakeshore Campus launched an ongoing initiative to collect unopened toiletries to donate to shelters.

It is with mixed feelings that we share that Kavelle Maharaj, Events Coordinator and Community Liaison has accepted a new position at Sheridan College

Humber President and CEO Chris Whitaker has decided to retire upon the completion of his second term at the end of June 2022.

After the success of last year’s FSCS staff & faculty book club, another round of book club meetings were held this semester.

Finding time and opportunities to focus on our own personal wellness, while important, is a challenge for many. 

Monthly Humber Wellness Talks were also held throughout the Fall 2021 semester, open to staff, faculty, students and community members.

This year, Humber’s Annual Employee Holiday Party, in collaboration with the Lakeshore Principal’s Office and HROE, was once again virtual.

We are pleased to announce June MacDonald-Jenkins as the new Senior Dean of the Faculty of Social and Community Services and the Principal of the Lakeshore Campus.

This year three folks from within our faculty were recipients of the 2021 President’s Awards.

Congratulations to Rita Estwick for receiving the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award from Canadian Security.

The FSCS partners with Emond Publications, providing access to a video (“The Struggle Back”) to instructors who use the Emond Publications text Mental Health Awareness for First Responders.

Valentina joined Humber’s Community and Justice Services (CJS) program in 2014. After graduating, she went on to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

Anthony is a proud graduate of the Bachelor of Child and Youth Care (B-CYC) program, which he joined in 2013.

This past winter semester, the Child and Youth Care Diploma program engaged in a COIL Project with Parul University, in India. 

During these unprecedented times, non-essential travel has been mostly put on hold across countries and industries. 

In Summer 2021, with travel restrictions still in place, virtual study exchange opportunities continue to be offered to Humber students.
