"As a 4th year student of the Bachelor of Community Development Program, I am filled with pride and a sense of accomplishment to stand before all of you as the newly elected Mayor of Orangeville. My journey to this role has not been a straight line, but rather a winding path filled with twists and turns and both Humber College and my professors have played an integral role.
My path to community development began when I married young and started my family. At 18, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life and did not have the opportunity to continue my education. Instead, I went to work to support my family, but what I found was that my job as a retail manager for various large brands brought me joy and a wealth of life experiences.
Working in retail taught me many valuable skills, including how to lead and inspire others, how to understand and appreciate different cultures, and how to be a good role model for my kids, my coworkers, and my community. As I grew in my career, I began to realize the importance of giving back to my community and started volunteering with non-profit organizations. Through my volunteer work, I found my true passion and discovered new talents I never knew I had.
This led to me running for Town Councillor in my community and to making the decision, at 39 years old, to start my post-secondary journey. The Community Development program that Humber offers has given me education, grown my skills and given me the confidence in my knowledge and application of that knowledge within my own community. Now, as Mayor, I have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the people who live in Orangeville and neighbouring municipalities, and I am committed to doing all I can to make our community a better place for everyone.
With the help of my dedicated staff, our Council team, the support of my family, and the backing of the community, I look forward to continuing to build upon the progress we have made together, and to creating a more equitable and inclusive Orangeville for all residents.
As a Community Development student, I have learned to prioritize my focus to ensure we are building a strong community and the valuable knowledge I have gained through my time at Humber has solidified my desire to focus on strong social policies.
I am honoured and humbled to serve as the Mayor of Orangeville and proud to be a Humber College student and I look forward to the work that lies ahead. I am excited for the opportunity to make a difference in our community."
