Aaron's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

During my time at Humber, I was immersed in a dynamic and engaging learning environment that not only provided relevant industry and technical knowledge but fostered invaluable networking opportunities. The PSI Faculty all displayed immense dedication and time into sharing their knowledge. From helping students with resume and interview prep, helping guide students on potential career paths, to being a mentor, the faculty created a comfortable atmosphere where everyone can strive.

Having taken classes at both Humber North and Lakeshore campuses, the facilities both have a great atmosphere for students for individualized or collaborative work. The campus gyms provided an excellent outlet for physical activity, allowing for a healthy balance between academic pursuits and personal well-being. Personally, the faculty was the best part of Humber and a huge reason for my success in the field. The industry events we were encouraged to attend is where I met my first and second employers. The constant encouragement and support from the faculty created a sense of empowerment and motivated students to strive for excellence.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

My experience since graduating has been nothing short of exciting. Since meeting my employer at the time through an event arranged through Humber, I worked throughout the physical security and emergency management field and learned of the various facets involved. Along the way, I’ve met a ton of great industry professionals and built lasting connections. In my current role, I am responsible for the overall asset protection of bank assets, employee preparedness, and travel and event risk management globally. This experience has broadened my understanding of the global application of physical security measures and provided me with a unique opportunity to learn about different areas under the physical security umbrella. From conducting country and city threat assessments, planning for large scale events, and having a part to play in the development of bank physical security standards, it’s never a dull moment. Additionally, I am a volunteer with the ASIS Toronto Chapter Education and DE&I Committees to build more awareness and promote opportunities for growth amongst young professionals through hosting various events both networking and educational.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

What I find most satisfying is playing a pivotal role in keeping employes and organizational assets safe. From supporting employees with tips to get to the office to navigating workplace safety concerns, the role provides a sense of fulfilment. Beyond that, the dynamic nature of the field keeps engaged and challenged constantly. Physical security is not static; it requires constant adaptation and innovation to stay ahead and respond to evolving threats and vulnerabilities. Additionally, networking within the industry has been very rewarding thus far. Everyone is always willing to meet up for a coffee and chat shop. As a young professional without the years of experience on my belt, these chats help get real world insight from established professionals. As someone who loves continuing education, physical security is never short on different avenues to learn! Ultimately with my career choice, by creating and knowing that my efforts contribute to creating a safe workplace for employees is gratifying.
