Please tell us about your time at Humber Polytechnic. What was the best part of it?
During my time at Humber Polytechnic in the Developmental Services Work program, one of the most impactful experiences was my field placement at a residential support agency for adults with developmental disabilities. It was there that I truly saw how the theory and practical skills I was learning in class came to life.
Courses like Pharmacology helped me understand the medications many clients were taking, their side effects, and the importance of safe administration. This knowledge made me feel confident and responsible when assisting with medication routines during placement. Meanwhile, Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) gave me a solid foundation in understanding behaviour as a form of communication. I applied ABA techniques when supporting a client with challenging behaviours by helping implement a consistent behaviour plan that promoted positive reinforcement and independence.
One moment that stood out was when I developed a visual schedule for a non-verbal client to support their daily routine. Watching the client's anxiety decrease and their engagement increase reminded me why I chose this field. It was a powerful blend of what I had learned academically and emotionally.
My experience at Humber not only gave me technical knowledge but also shaped my values around inclusion, dignity, and person-centered care. I left the program feeling prepared and passionate about supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in ways that truly make a difference.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
Since graduating from Humber's Developmental Services Work program, I’ve been working in two residential home settings, supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Balancing both roles has been challenging, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding and has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
In both homes, I support individuals with diverse needs—from assisting with daily living skills and personal care to implementing behaviour support plans and facilitating community outings. Thanks to my background in Applied Behavioural Analysis, I’ve been able to help develop and maintain positive behaviour strategies that encourage independence and reduce anxiety for clients with complex needs. My Pharmacology training has also been invaluable when administering medications safely and documenting accurately.
One of the most meaningful moments happened when I supported a young adult transitioning into semi-independent living. I worked closely with them on life skills such as meal preparation, managing appointments, and using public transportation. Seeing their confidence grow over time, and knowing I played a part in that progress, reaffirmed my passion for this work.
Working two jobs has taught me how to manage time effectively, stay organized, and maintain strong communication with both teams. It also reminded me that consistency, compassion, and patience are key when supporting individuals in a residential setting.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
What I find most satisfying about my career as a Developmental Services Worker is knowing that the support I provide genuinely impacts someone’s quality of life. Whether it’s helping a person learn a new skill, navigate a difficult situation, or simply feel heard and valued, the work is deeply meaningful.
Every day brings an opportunity to advocate for inclusion, dignity, and independence. I find fulfillment in building trusting relationships with the individuals I support, celebrating their progress, and being part of a team that prioritizes person-centered care. Even small successes—like helping someone communicate their needs more clearly or feel comfortable in a new environment—are incredibly rewarding.
This career challenges me, teaches me, and constantly reminds me of the strength and potential in every person, regardless of their abilities. That sense of purpose is what makes this work not only satisfying, but truly inspiring.
