Haripriya's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

Even though I initially struggled with culture shock after moving to Canada as an international student, I always felt at home at Humber College. The welcoming campus environment, diverse student body, and supportive faculty made a world of difference. Humber didn’t just provide an education; it offered a community.

The best part of my time there was how practically focused and hands-on the learning experience was. My Protection, Security and Investigation program not only deepened my academic knowledge, but also gave me access to real-world scenarios and simulations that helped build my confidence.

I was fortunate to connect with inspiring instructors and peers who shared the same passion for public safety and justice. These relationships provided mentorship and opened doors to volunteering opportunities, like becoming a TPS Rover Member with Toronto Police.

Humber played a major role in shaping my professional foundation and personal growth, preparing me for success in the field of asset protection and investigations.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

Since graduating from Humber, I’ve gained extensive experience in asset protection, loss prevention, and investigative work across different business environments, including retail, warehousing, and healthcare. I currently work in Asset Protection for Loblaws (Real Canadian Superstore), where I handle internal investigations, surveillance operations, and compliance reporting.

I also pursued an MBA in Finance with a specialization in Forensic Accounting, which has deepened my understanding of financial fraud, risk mitigation, and auditing procedures. Combining my education with f ieldwork, I’ve been able to support both loss prevention and internal compliance investigations more effectively.

Volunteering as a TPS Rover with the Toronto Police Service gave me exposure to community policing and further reinforced my dedication to public safety. I continue to build my skill set through training such as Wicklander-Zulawski interview techniques and ongoing development in OSINT and surveillance strategies.

Overall, my post-graduation journey has been one of growth, continuous learning, and meaningful impact.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

What I find most satisfying about my career in asset protection and investigation is the ability to make a real difference by preventing harm and protecting people, property, and assets. Every day brings a unique challenge—whether it's analyzing security footage, conducting interviews, or identifying patterns of internal theft—and I thrive in this dynamic environment.

There’s a deep sense of fulfillment in being trusted to uphold ethical standards, identify vulnerabilities, and act with integrity to support both staff and customers. I enjoy the investigative process from gathering facts to piecing together evidence and helping resolve complex cases.

Moreover, this career has allowed me to blend my analytical skills with my passion for justice. With each case, I learn something new and sharpen my instincts. I also find satisfaction in mentoring others, especially new hires, and contributing to a culture of safety and accountability.

Knowing that my work prevents losses and helps organizations stay secure is deeply rewarding. It’s a role that demands vigilance, empathy, and critical thinking all of which I’m proud to bring to the table.
