Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?
The best part of my experience at Humber were my professors and my classmates. The professors all had life and work experience and were able to bring the course content to life, making classes engaging, interactive and fun. Their knowledge of the material and their ability to help students easily understand and connect with it.
My classmates, all younger than I, also made it a joy to come to class. Hearing their ideas, having brainstorming sessions, whether virtually or in-class, helped me see things from a different set of eyes.
The amenities of Humber, the communal spaces, the social clubs and events were also great, just less utilized by a “seasoned” student/human like me. I was also proud of the fact that I was also a student representative for my class, taking part in meetings with faculty and other student leaders. An experience like no other, especially at the end of the program where I was able to have input into the future direction of the program as assessed by faculty and community/industry partners.
All in all, my time at Humber was well spent and is going to help me in life for years to come. Thank you PSI, thank you Humber.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
At the risk of sounding corny and cliché, after graduating, so many doors have opened up for me. I have been chosen to interview for leadership roles that I had been overlooked for. Roles such as Training Manager, Security Manager, Public Safety and Security Coordinator. Now I am being shortlisted to interview for these roles and advancing to the final interview in most cases. The knowledge I have gained from the PSI program has made a much better prospect for employers, not just on paper, but being able to articulate myself well during these interviews, exhibiting to potential employers the value of my experience and what I learnt at Humber. My career advancement has definitely been positively impacted by my participation in and graduation from the PSI program and Humber.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
My career choice is a continuation of the work I was doing back in my home country of Trinidad and Tobago. After graduating from the PSI program at Humber, I was fortunate to step into a similar leadership role here in Canada. The satisfying thing about my career choice is that I feel at home doing the job, with increased confidence and clarity that comes from the education I received at Humber. I am able to easily combine my experience from my previous jobs and what I have learned to add value to the organization I work for and the department that I am now a part of. I feel respected by my peers, those I am responsible for leading and those I am responsible for keeping safe.
