Jemeisha's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

I completed the full-time Social Service Worker program at Humber College between 2013 and 2015. My time at Humber was enriched by the diverse cohort of individuals with whom I shared experiences and insights, contributing significantly to my educational journey. Interacting with peers already established in the field provided me with valuable perspectives and knowledge, while connecting with fellow new learners allowed for mutual exchange of course insights and support.

The practicum opportunities were particularly valuable, bridging theoretical learning with real-world applications. This blend of theoretical education and practical experience empowered me to translate classroom knowledge into meaningful support for others, enhancing the depth and quality of my learning experience. Moreover, I appreciated the diverse range of topics covered in the curriculum, including counselling skills, Family Dynamics, Cross-Cultural Skills, Case Management: Advocacy, among others. These courses broadened my understanding of various challenges and viewpoints, equipping me with a comprehensive knowledge base. Upon graduation, I felt well-prepared to pursue further academic endeavors, as the program's structure had adeptly prepared me for the nature of university education.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

After a year of employment, I made the decision to return to academia and pursued admission to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at York University. During my fourth year, I undertook a practicum at Humber College within the part-time Social Service Worker (SSW) program. Subsequent to the completion of my placement, I became a Student Support Advisor for the part-time SSW program, which I held for a brief period. While engaged in the SSW program, I worked within various community outreach and social supports agencies across the Greater Toronto Area. Additionally, I supported at Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber in various other capacities over the past 6 years, leading me to my current position. In 2021, I completed my master’s degree in social work at York University. Following the attainment of my master’s degree, I transitioned to a new role at Humber College as the Coordinator for Student Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at The Black Student Support and Engagement Centre. In addition, I deliver counseling services to individuals facing mental health challenges through my private practice.
