Khemroy's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

As a mature student, I was a bit nervous attending the CYC program at Humber College; however, that quickly went away when I met some of my classmates, teachers and I saw my first few marks from tests and assignments. Having worked with youths for a few years, it was great learning how and why different applications work or not work when engaging with youths.

Humber for me was filled with a lot of great memories of bonding with classmates and learning from teachers who have done the same or similar work in the field that I wanted to work in. Thinking of my time at Humber the saying “Adding tools to your tool belt” comes to mind. I feel like this saying sums up my time at Humber so well. Each class, group work, and discussions were a chance for you to learn something or gain knowledge that you can save and use in the future. Choosing to attend Humber for something I have a passion for was a great experience that has been very beneficial.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

After graduation in 2019, I got hired as a substitute CYC at my last field experience before Covid closed everything down. In 2020, I got a job at Kerry’s Place through an agency. Kerry’s Place is a group home for adults with autism. I learned a lot about myself during that time, but I was not able to apply anything that I had learned from my time at Humber. I decided to search for a job closer to my field, and with the help of one of my mentors, I started working at “the Dam” in October 2022. The Dam stands for developing, assisting and mentoring youth. There are two locations, one in Meadowvale and one in Cooksville. The Dam is a drop-in space for youths 13 to 19, where we partner with youth to create an inclusive community where all are welcomed, valued, and respected. This job allows me to use my talents and passion to have a positive effect on the youths I work with.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

I honestly believe that this career chose me before I even realized that it was a career option. As stated before, I was working with youth for a while before finding out that it was a career choice; but once I did it only made sense to learn and understand more about how to be successful in this field. There are a few satisfying things for me in this career. One is building friendships with the youth, because without that it is harder to be real and open. The next thing is seeing a youth reach a goal or finish a task that they wanted to accomplish. It is also satisfying doing something that you are passionate about. I now finally understand the saying “do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.”
