Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?
During my time at Humber, I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying in the Protection, Security and Investigations diploma program (2020-2022). During my time in the PSI program, it was unprecedented times to be studying during COVID. Although most of the courses were shifted online during my studies, I was truly amazed with how engaging and knowledgeable the professors were during my time in the program. The best part about my time at Humber was connecting with my peers and conducting practical scenarios based on the knowledge/tools you gain throughout the courses provided in the PSI program.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
After graduating at Humber 2022, I was able to transition into the security field with Gardaworld at the Toronto Immigration Holding Centre. It’s been a unique experience working at a federal site, learning the immigration side of things and working alongside CBSA officers. I’ve had the opportunity to learn various positions within site, and it’s truly been a great steppingstone.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
As a current Transport Guard at the Toronto Immigration Holding Centre, I truly enjoy making a difference by providing safety and security for individuals within the site. Whether my tasks involve transporting and escorting detainees to the designated destinations in a safe and professional manner or resolving conflicts between detainees where verbal de-escalation is involved to prevent further conflicts. There is always something new each shift and being adaptable in any situation has evolved my skills in the security field.
Interacting with many individuals from various backgrounds, it’s important to be vigilant and proactive in my duties by ensuring the safety and well-being of all detainees that are held within the Immigration Holding Centre.
I hope to transition into the law enforcement field, making a meaningful and positive impact within my community in the near future!
