Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?
The time I spent at Humber College was a very memorable one. From the first day of orientation I knew that I had chosen an extraordinary college and a great program to further my studies and gain practical skills in security, investigations and crime analysis fields. The best parts I would say were the insightful lectures and the support provided by my professors including the resources available at the college which gave me the extra edge to successfully graduate with honours at the end of the program. This program enhanced my background in policing and has opened up new doors which I never knew existed in both the private and public sectors. I highly recommend the FSCS programs and my advice to future graduates would be to never give up and age is just a number when it comes to learning and furthering your education. I sincerely thank Humber College and by extension the FSCS programs for affording me this opportunity to expand my horizons and achieve my career goals.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
As an international student with no work experience in Canada raised some concerns regarding employment after graduation. However, my concerns were laid to rest because of the encouragement and guidance from my professors which led me to applying for the appropriate positions coming from a policing background. I am very happy to announce that before graduating I obtained a part-time security guard position with Paragon Security at George Brown College. Since graduation, I continued applying for various full-time positions in the security sector where I was successful in obtaining interviews but in the majority of cases I was not successful due to previous work experience in Canada being a drawback. I also took a part-time position as a building maintenance technician. A role involving general access control duties, maintenance of physical infrastructure including locks and doors.
I also completed smart serve certification and after successfully completing training in various areas with Paragon Security which included Standard First Aid, Handcuffing and Self defence certification, I recently obtained a full-time position at George Brown College, Casa Loma Campus. This experience has taught me to never give up and that perseverance and honesty always pays off.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
I would say that the most satisfying part about my career choice is the ability to put what I have learnt from the PSI program into practice. This would not only lead me to being a better security professional but also highlights the diversity of the PSI program which is very lucrative in the security industry when it comes to the various opportunities that are unlocked by pursuing this course of study. These include opportunities in Corrections, Parking Enforcement, Private Investigations, Policing, Crime Analysis, Online investigations, Cybersecurity, Corporate Security and Security Management. I highly recommend the Protection, Security and Investigation (PSI) program provided by Humber College. It has been a wonderful and rewarding experience and one I will never forget.
