Ronny's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

The time that I spent at Humber College will always be one that I will cherish. During the two years of my Diploma, I have had to overcome hurdles and so I worked as hard as from the first day. Along the way, I met others who were also working hard in their studies. In no time, we forged new and strong friendships. My friends at Humber continue to be part of my life and together we reminisce about the times that we have worked together on projects and preparing for exams. It is with great pleasure that I get to see them also achieving new heights in their career.

I had chosen Humber College over other colleges as I believed that it would be an institution where teachers care for you and help when you are struggling, especially as I was juggling full-time work and full-time course load. This proved to be correct and ensured that I could go at my own pace in my studies with the assistance of my teachers who helped when I struggled. I would like to thank all my teachers who shared their knowledge and work experience. A special thanks goes to Prof Daniel Schwartz, who helped me through my journey to graduation. I still keep in touch with some of my teachers and I think that this is pretty special. The teachers at Humber are very caring about student’s successes, fun and sweet loving.

Earning my diploma meant a lot to me and I am proud of myself for attaining this accomplishment. I would never hesitate to recommend Humber college to new students as my time at Humber was very enriching.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

After earning my Diploma, I wanted to move up in my career. Prior to then, I was in an entry level job in the security sector. I was quite ready for the challenge as Humber College had equipped me with the knowledge and experience that I needed to be able to work in the security sector. Together with my previous work experience, I secured a role as Area Manager with Brinks. In my role, I represented Brinks at more than fifty hotels. I had to ensure that their site was secured while dealing with the clients and the site manager. While it was a challenging experience, my time at Humber had taught me how to succeed in life and to not be afraid of new challenges. My two years at Humber College had been a huge challenge, yet, I had managed to complete and achieve goals.

In my current role, I combine my knowledge in the Health and Safety sector with my Security Diploma. Recently I was chosen to be part of the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) members and completed the tough process of obtaining its certification.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

What I find most satisfying about my career choice is that the Security sector is always evolving. With the advances in technology and AI, it is quite exciting to see how these new technologies can be implemented into our current workload and help us achieve goals more efficiently. It was really amazing that when I was at Humber College, we had several courses that introduced us to technologies that were being used at that time. While these technologies are considered “old” now, Humber taught us that technology is an integral part of our work and that it is crucial for us to be in step with it if we want to be part of the performing workforce.

Further, what is most satisfying about my career choice is that I have the option to diversify in different sectors while still working for the security department. For example, in the past, I have worked in the hospitality, banking and media sectors while performing security-related tasks. Currently, as Quality, Health, Safety, Environment and Social Coordinator for Qair International, I implement and follow up on all operational and compliance procedures for international lenders such as International Finance Corporation (IFC’s) Standards. This option in diversification ensures that I can continue to evolve and learn.
