Ryan's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

I started my journey at Humber College in 2018. I knew right away, after meeting the faculty, that I would enjoy my time in the program. Everyone, both staff and peers, were supportive, kind, and accommodating. I truly could not have asked for a more amazing start to my career in Child and Youth Care (CYC). When thinking back on my time over those three years, I can’t pinpoint one exact memory that stood out. Instead, I will share that every moment made being in the program worth it. Humber’s CYC program has become part of my history, and I am proud to share that lineage to the world.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

I graduated in 2021 (not the easiest time as most can imagine). But I think that it was due to that time period that getting a job became easier. We are in an era where mental health and community support has become recognized as essential. With that said, when I graduated, I started work as a Recreational Therapist, before moving on to work in the shelter system for around a year. In typical CYC fashion, I did have more than one job, but I enjoyed it. After a few realizations, I decided to further my education, and thanks to my Advanced Diploma from Humber, I bridged into the third year of a Degree in CYC at Toronto Metropolitan University. Now, I have recently graduated and will soon begin my Masters.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

I think the most satisfying choice I made was to go to Humber. I always thought that maybe I should have gone a different route, or even just skip doing a diploma and do my degree instead. Nope. I know now, without a doubt, that I made the right decision. Not only did Humber allow me to gain over 1000+ hours of work experience, but I was also able to learn new skills and lessons that I never got in university. I graduated with new contacts in the field, peers for life, amazing memories, and much much more. The Advanced Diploma also gave me the reassurance I needed, that if I wanted to advance my education, I still had the option.
