Please tell us about your time at Humber Polytechnic. What was the best part of it?
My experience in the Police Foundations program at Humber Polytechnic was fantastic. I met so many great professors that inspired and pushed me, helping me become the successful security management professional that I am today. It’s hard to narrow down what the best part was because there were so many great aspects! From becoming the Co-Chair of the Toronto Police Service Rover Crew which was exclusive to Humber PFP students, being invited to the Chief’s Gala and meeting Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders one-on-one, getting a private tour of the Ontario Police College, using my skills to quickly become a 911 operator with the Durham Regional Police Service after graduating, then using that experience to move ahead in my security career to a director level before the age of 30, and achieving the Faculty of Social & Community Service’s 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award… the list goes on and on. I treasure the entire time that I had at Humber.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
After graduating from the Police Foundations program, I was quickly employed by the Durham Regional Police Service as a 911 operator, as I dreamed of becoming a police officer (as most Police Foundations students do). However, my calling to the security industry was much stronger. Applying my education as well as my previous experience in guarding and scheduling roles I moved up as a security manager, then a director, and now a strategy professional at my current employer, ASP Security, all while continuing to volunteer in various organizations such as the Toronto Police Service and ASIS International, which I still do today. I am also a part-time professor at Seneca Polytechnic, teaching Security & Crime Prevention. I’ve received prestigious recognitions for my work such as the Canadian Security Top 10 Under 40 Award in 2021, Associate Protection Professional certification through ASIS International in 2021, ASP Security’s Dedication to Excellence Award in 2023, the Security Business Magazine’s Top Innovator Award in 2024, and a Canada OSPA in 2024 for the category of Outstanding Contract Security Manager/Director. My passion for education has also continued, as I’m building on what I learned at Humber by attending the Master of Public Safety program at Wilfried Laurier University.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
This one is easy – as a security management professional I get to help keep the people, places, and things we all love safe. There isn’t much else more rewarding and meaningful than that. For anyone uncertain about the security industry, let me provide assurance that this is one of the best careers out there for that very reason.
