Scarlett's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

It was a pivotal moment in my young adulthood, it was the first time I was taking charge of my education and studying something that had a lot of value to me. It put me in uncomfortable situations where I was pushed into working harder in my studies than I was used to, asking more questions, collaborating with new people with different ideas and perspectives and learning how to see the world from a new lens. It’s hard to pin point a time where it was the best, I look back at the entire experience and genuinely enjoyed all of it. The process of having really good results and then having some results that showed me areas I needed to work harder on was all extremely rewarding. I’m happy to say I’m still friends with many I attended the program with and I had great experiences with the professors.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

Since graduation, I’ve pursued my sport competing on for Boxing Canada on the international stage participating in multiple major games, including the Pan American Games, in pursuit of the Olympic Games. The journey has been challenging with many ups and downs, consistent focus and accountability is necessary to reach my goals and a lot of this discipline I credit to my time in college. The team work and collaboration skills are crucial when we are spending months at a time with our national team in foreign countries. Accountability for our performance and not blaming others for our results was a life skill I that has helped me through many areas of my life to this day. Many of the courses in my program such as conflict resolution, psychology, sociology, interpersonal skills, ethical issue etc. have been relevant in working successfully with the national team to ensure a positive experience with my coaches, team staff and teammates.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

What I love about my career is the experience I gain that I can offer to the community. The dual purpose in my career choice is that its enjoyable for people to watch and support and most importantly the lessons and experience I gain that teach me every day about who I am as an individual and how I can always show better for those close to me. I’m aware that it’s challenging for anyone to make the decision to dedicate years of their life to a goal that is not guaranteed and very high risk. That’s why it holds so much value. Being an example of how important the journey is and not focusing on only the destination, I hope to be showing how rewarding it is to relentlessly pursue your goals unapologetically. We create our destiny.
