Shaquiell's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber Polytechnic. What was the best part of it?

My time at Humber Polytechnic was incredibly enriching. The best part was having the opportunity to complete my final placement at CAMH, where I gained valuable hands-on workplace experience. This placement allowed me to work within a multidisciplinary team that supports youth with complex needs and addictions. It was a unique opportunity to apply my knowledge in a practical setting, collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds, and contribute to meaningful interventions for clients. Overall, Humber provided me with a strong foundation, practical skills, and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

Since graduating from Humber Polytechnic in 2016, it has been a great journey reflecting on how far I have come both personally and professionally. I began my career as a CYW within the TDSB, providing social emotional support to students and staff. This role allowed me to build strong foundations in supporting students in educational settings. I also gained experience in day treatment programs, working with students undergoing mental health treatment, where I developed skills in creating individualized interventions.

Over the years, I’ve worked with various agencies across the GTA, offering interim support to children and youth with ASD and complex needs. Each experience deepened my understanding of the diverse challenges faced by young people and the importance of tailored approaches to their care.

Most recently, I transitioned into case facilitation with the Lumenus WIT program. In this role, I collaborate closely with families, schools, and community partners to develop and implement strategies that build capacity for children and youth with complex needs. It’s a role that allows me to combine my expertise in direct support with broader systemic planning, ensuring clients receive comprehensive care and support. Overall, my journey since graduating has been fulfilling and has provided me with invaluable growth and insight.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

What I find most satisfying about my career choice is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children, youth, and their families. Helping individuals overcome challenges, build resilience, and achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the progress that young people make—whether it’s learning a new skill, improving their behaviour, or gaining confidence—reminds me why I chose this path.

As a racialized man, my social identity has deeply influenced how I approach my work. Understanding the unique challenges faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds allows me to connect with clients on a deeper level. This perspective has enhanced my ability to empathize and advocate for those who may face additional barriers due to race, culture, or identity.

I also value the variety and collaboration my work entails. Working with multidisciplinary teams, schools, and community agencies has allowed me to gain diverse perspectives and develop creative, tailored solutions for clients. It’s fulfilling to know that the strategies I help implement not only address immediate needs but also contribute to long-term growth and independence.

Ultimately, the most satisfying part of my career is knowing that my work helps create positive change, empowering individuals and families to navigate challenges and lead fulfilling lives.
