Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?
The program at Humber allowed me to become immersed in the learning experience. Within such a short time, I was able to learn theory, skills, and practice applying them with my peers in the classroom. Each professor taught not only from books, but their personal experience. I was able to connect with them on a personal level, as well as with my peers that all came from diverse fields. It’s the most supportive and enriching learning experience I could have asked for. And I was able to secure a job right after! Before this program, I had little experience working with children and youth. Through this program, I was able to learn about all the possible routes I could take after graduating and how to go about making those possible.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
Since graduating, I was able to get a job as a CYC working with youth in an inpatient facility. Then, with a recommendation letter from one of my professors at Humber, I was able to enroll in a postgraduate program online. I am currently completing my Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. I use the skills learned in the CYC program every day and continue to refer back to the knowledge I learned.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
For me, it is satisfying how diverse the field is. There are innumerable routes to take after graduating once you have the foundation of the CYC program. It was almost overwhelming, but I was grateful that I could dip my toe into different areas and learn about myself. I also find it really satisfying that the skills learned can be applied to various fields and diverse jobs within those fields. You could work with different age groups, different populations (clinical vs counselling vs legal), and different environments (teaching, counselling, advocating, Now, I feel comfortable enough to know that I belong here, yet uncomfortable enough to know that the learning never stops.
