Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?
My time at Humber College was nothing short of wonderful. I enjoyed and savored every moment from the course work, placements, interactions with the professors along with the lush green environment of the Lakeshore campus. The best part of the DSW diploma was the opportunities for employment as a DSW that ensued by graduating as a proud Humber Hawk! I was equipped with the relevant knowledge and hands-on training needed for success in the field due to a comprehensive DSW portfolio from Humber College. This was a result of immense preparation that students received from their instructors in the various courses that simulated real-life scenarios and problem-solving discourse that proved to be immensely useful in the field.
Please tell us about your experience since graduating.
Upon graduation, I have since been employed at Community Living North Halton (developmental services agency) as a Direct Support Professional where I get to interact and support various individuals and that has truly been a very satisfying part of my job. I am pursuing a Master’s in Disability Studies where the skills and knowledge I gained from my time in Humber College’s DSW program have continued to grow. My passion and knack for people’s skills has rendered me a position as a part-time faculty in the DSW program at Humber College, where I get to join the fantastic mentors that guided me into the professional that I am today and I hope to continue to shape the minds of prospective students looking to make a difference in the lives of supported individuals.
What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?
Seeing people with disabilities grow, feel empowered and included in our society is the most satisfying and rewarding feeling in the world. As a DSW, I have the privilege of meeting people, building connections, advocating, teaching, and learning and moreover, I get to be an integral part of their lives and make a positive impact. Every day offers new challenges and learning experiences, which can keep the work dynamic and fulfilling. Additionally, the sense of community and collaboration with other professionals in the field often makes the work feel like you are part of something larger than yourself—one that is focused on improving the quality of life for those who need support the most. Every day we work towards making our community an equitable and compassionate one.
