Wendy's Experience at Humber

Please tell us about your time at Humber College. What was the best part of it?

My time at Humber Polytechnic was a rewarding and transformative experience. Studying Protection, Security, and Investigations enabled me to build on my previous law enforcement background while expanding my knowledge of Canadian Laws, risk management, investigative techniques and cybersecurity.

The highlights of my time at Humber were the practical, hands-on learning environment, participating in realistic scenarios, simulations, and case studies that reflected real-world challenges. I also appreciated the diversity of perspectives in the classroom, as students from various backgrounds engaged in discussions that broadened my understanding of security issues from both a local and international viewpoint. The support from faculty members, particularly the professors, was exceptional. They brought extensive industry experience, which was crucial in preparing me for the professional demands of the security and investigations field in Canada.

Please tell us about your experience since graduating.

Since graduating, I have applied my skills in the private security sector, currently working with Paragon Security at Humber Polytechnic. This role has allowed me to integrate classroom learning with real-world security operations, including access control, threat assessment, and incident response.

My experience in both policing and private security has reinforced my adaptability in diverse environments and improved my ability to manage difficult situations effectively. I have also continued to develop my leadership skills, with the long-term goal of opening a private investigation firm in Jamaica that will offer advanced training and high-security services. My career path since graduation has been a steady progression toward that vision, blending academic preparation, field experience, and continuous professional development.

What do you find most satisfying about your career choice?

What I find most satisfying about my career in security and investigations is the ability to make a tangible difference in people’s lives by offering safety and peace of mind. Whether it’s preventing a potential threat, resolving a conflict, or uncovering crucial information during an investigation, each task contributes to protecting communities and individuals. There are responsibilities and trust that come with this profession that I sincerely value, knowing that my actions can directly impact lives.

My career path also offers continuous learning opportunities as security threats evolve and technology advances. Staying ahead requires flexibility, creativity, and critical thinking. This keeps the work engaging and challenges me to remain vigilant and resourceful. Most important, being aware that my skills can be used both locally and internationally to improve safety and security gives me fulfillment and purpose.
