Black Women in Canada: Stories of Strength, Leadership, and Community
March 12th, 2024
As part of Humber’s annual Black Heritage Month 365, Humber College and the Lakeshore Principal’s Office hosted the panel discussion event, Black Women in Canada: Stories of Strength, Leadership & Community. The theme for this year’s Humber Black Heritage Month 365 was inspired by a powerful quote from Audre Lorde, “Without Community, there is no Liberation!” The panel discussion centred around this year’s theme, with a focus on the development of young Black female leaders.
Panelists included the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, BlackNorth Initiative CEO, Dahabo Ahmed-Omer, and the Chair of IGNITE, Shanell Roye. The discussion was moderated by FSCS Faculty member, Julet Allen, and Bachelor of Community Development (CD) student, Berlin Abdy. The event opened with a spoken word performance by Prince Amoaka, who serves as a BSSE Facilitator and is a Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice (CJ) student. Over 100 Humber staff, students, and community members attended the event, in person and online.
