New Faces in FSCS

Dr. Kimberly Carter
Associate Dean, Continuous Professional Learning

Kimberly Carter started her new role as Associate Dean of FSCS’s CPL programs in Septmber 2023. Kim has spent 15+ years designing and delivering high-quality, accessible, academic programming so that people can secure meaningful work. Before joining Continuous Professional Learning at Humber College, Kim worked at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Chang School of Continuing Education as a Program Director (2020-22) and Program Manager (2018-20). She has taught at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy as well as Okanagan College and Toronto Metropolitan University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship, PhD, and Master of Arts in International Relations at the University of Toronto and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from McGill University. While earning these credentials, Kim studied and worked in Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Israel.

Dr. Daniel Bear Director
Centre for Social Innovation

Daniel Bear moved into the role of Director for the Centre for Social Innovation in August 2023. Daniel started at Humber in 2015 as a professor in the Bachelor of Social Science, Criminal Justice (BSS-CJ) program. He is a funded researcher who focuses on drug policy, with an emphasis on both cannabis and harm reduction and the policing of drugs and community policing practices. Daniel is the Canadian Lead for the Global Cannabis Cultivation Research Consortium, a group of researchers from 18 countries studying small-scale cannabis cultivation. He is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) on two funded research projects: an NSERC-funded project titled “Engaging and Education Young-Adult Cannabis 2.0 Consumers”, as well as a recently funded ATRP grant entitled “Development of a Data-Driven Human-Centered Design Process for Cannabis Education for Pharmacists”. Daniel holds a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Master of Science (Social Policy Research), and a PhD in Social Policy both from The London School of Economics and Political Science.

Eswaran Ardhanareshwaran
Faculty Marketing and Recruitment Officer

This September Eswaran joined FSCS in a full-time capacity as the Faculty Marketing and Recruitment Officer. Eswaran first joined Humber College in 2020 as a Research Assistant, and held a number of roles within Humber College, before joining FSCS as the Senior Student Support Officer in 2022. He holds a Bachelors in Electrical & Electronics Engineering degree, and is a Humber graduate from the Project Management post-graduate program. He brings extensive experience in project and event management, along with experience in communications, stakeholder management, and presentations. Eswaran also brings in Tableau expertise with his knowledge in data analytics and ability to build informative dashboards to help drive strategic goals at both the Faculty and Institutional level. Over the past year Eswaran has provided ongoing, comprehensive support in leading FSCS-wide events and recruitment initiatives.

Amanda Raus
Program Support Officer

Amanda joined FSCS as a Program Support Officer in January 2023, and became a full-time PSO in August. Before joining Humber College, Amanda was the Academic Advisor and Career Services Programming Lead for St. Clair College. She brings advanced analytical and evaluation skills from working as a Research Assistant at Wilfred Laurier University, and as an Assistant Inspector and Administrative Assistant with the Region of Peel. Amanda holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wilfred Laurier University. As a PSO, Amanda has not only provided a comprehensive range of support services to students, faculty, program co-ordinators, and staff, but she also played a pivotal role in successfully coordinating FSCS’s first ever five-day Humber College - Motorola First Response Camp.

Karlena Waugh
Events Co-ordinator, Lakeshore Principal’s Office

Karlena joined the Lakeshore Principal’s Office in September 2023 as the Events Co-ordinator. She brings extensive experience in event planning for corporate events, such as MLSE, TIFF, and HoneyJam. She also holds over 5 years’ experience running her own event management & production business. Karlena brings strong presentation and facilitator skills to this role through her work as a keynote speaker, co-author and community leader. Her award-nominated organization, The Biz Mixer, focuses on educating and bringing young entrepreneurs and creatives together throughout the Region of Peel and globally. She has extensive experience working with youth in community settings, focusing on developing events to build a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive community. Karlena holds an Honours Bachelors of Arts (Sexuality, Marriage and Family Studies, Biology Minor) degree from University of Waterloo, along with training in ASIST Suicide Intervention and Mental Health First Aid.

Ariel Lewis
Communications and Administration Co-ordinator

Ariel Lewis moved into the role of Communications and Adminsitration Co-ordinator in August 2023. Ariel first joined Humber College in November of 2022 as a Program Support Officer with FSCS, supporting the social portfolio programs. Ariel brings several years of experience in communications, event management, and post-secondary administration to the role, working for institutions including Centennial College, the University of Toronto, and CBC/Radio Canada. Ariel has a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Toronto and is also a Humber alumna, having completed a postgraduate certificate in Broadcasting - Radio.

As the Communications and Administration Co-ordinator, Ariel is responsible for strategic communications, as well as confidential and complex administrative support and leadership.

Sophia Pacini
WIL Project Co-ordinator

Sophia Pacini recently joined FSCS as the Faculty’s first ever Project Co-ordinator for Work Integrated Learning. In this new role, Sophia will strengthen and establish new community partnerships to further develop WIL opportunities within FSCS. She brings exceptional communication, research and evaluation skills to this role. Sophia is a Humber College FSCS graduate. She started her studies in the Police Foundations (PFP) program, before bridging into the Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice (BSS-CJ) degree. While completing her studies, Sophia was a Peer Tutor with PALS as well as a Research Assistant for several projects within FSCS. Before joining the WIL team, Sophia was a Student Border Services Officer with the Canada Border Services Agency. In addition to her position with WIL, Sophia is also a Research Consultant for the City of Toronto and the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Areas. She holds a Master of Arts in Sociology and Social Psychology from McMaster University, where she is currently completing her PhD in Sociology.

Najma Mahamoud
Faculty Scheduler

Najma Mahamoud joined the Faculty of Social and Community Services as a Full-time Faculty Scheduler this Fall. Najma graduated with honours from the Bachelor of Social Science - Criminal Justice (BSS-CJ) degree program in May 2023. While completing her studies, Najma was a Career Support Peer at the Academic and Career Success Centre, where she assisted fellow students with their resumes, cover letters, mock interviews, and LinkedIn profiles. She brings advanced analytical and organizational skills to this role. In addition to her Bachelors in Criminal Justice, Najma holds certifications in Google Data Analytics and Microsoft Administration. She is committed to supporting FSCS and contributing to the positive atmosphere at Humber College.
