PFP had a busy Fall 2024 semester! On September 28, Semester 3 Police Foundations (PFP) students took part in the Rescue Weekend Mass Casualty Inter-professional Education (IPE) event at the North campus. In collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness, students engaged in a mass crisis simulation with multiple programs, including Paramedic, Emergency Telecommunications, Nursing, Pre- Service Firefighter Education and Training, and Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management,. As a part of the simulation, PFP faculty Frank Doto and Peter Iskander taught students how to direct traffic, manage witnesses and bystanders, and support the victims of the mass vehicle collision and service providers in responding to the scene.
For the first time ever, 10 of our Semester 3 PFP students engaged in the Before the Badge Program with Peel Regional Police Services. The six-week internship program was held at Peel Regional Police headquarters and participants from Humber and Sheridan Police Foundations prorgams learned practical skills in policing. In addition, they each received a $250.00 bursary to begin their policing career. We would like to thank our students for a job well done in representing Humber PFP and paving the way for more opportunities for PFP students.
Another first, Semester 3 students attended the Inter-Collegiate PREP Challenge hosted by Sheridan PFP to compete against Cambrian, Durham, Conestoga, Sheridan and Mohawk and Halton and Peel Police Cadets. Our students took part in two rounds of a timed PREP course, shaving off a total 45 seconds collectively in their second round.
On November 29th, 2024, eight PFP students along with faculty member Linda Shelly volunteered to plan and host the PFP Social R&R event for PFP faculty and students. A day full of games, a professors' baby face contest, prizes, loads of food, a Taekwondo performance of flying kicks and breaking concrete, motivational speeches from alumni, and karaoke. It was a time for folks to come together to relax, connect, unwind and have fun. Howie the Hawk was also there to spread the good cheer for a much-needed and fantastic event!
Lastly, we said goodbye to our fitness faculty member Peggy Higginson-Stubbs who retired at the end of the Fall 2024 semester. Peggy first joined Humber Polytechnic as an instructor in September 2004. In her time at Humber, Peggy has made significant contributions to the fitness streams in the PFP program. She's had a positive impact on countless PFP students and alumni. She shares, "I want to let them know how much I have enjoyed my teaching career and how fortunate I am to have worked with such an amazing team in PFP".
We will miss Peggy and wish her all the very best in her well-deserved retirement.
