Faculty-led Programs Abroad Available in 2020

The FSCS is excited to announce that we will be offering three faculty-led programs abroad in May 2020. Students have the opportunity to accrue placement hours through participation and will experience their field of practice through different contexts and lenses. This year’s programs include: 

Odense, Denmark

Led by faculty members Linda Hill and Julie Muravsky, and in collaboration with partners at University College Lillebaelt, participants will attend a social work conference hosted by SocNet98, the European Network of Universities/Schools of Social Work. Joined by social work students and faculty from across Europe, students will learn in-depth about social issues facing Denmark and other European countries. Following the conference in week two, participants will continue to learn more about social services and community development in Denmark through site visits at local community organizations and agencies, and through project-based learning in collaboration with UCL students.

Kingston, Jamaica – Youth & Criminal Justice

In collaboration with the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the University of West Indies, FSCS faculty Sheria Myrie and Lisa Morris are developing an engaging program that will explore criminal justice in Jamaica with a particular examination on their diverse models and approaches to corrective action, detention, rehabilitation, and reintegration of young offenders. Participants will be immersed in an engaging learning environment that will include lectures and workshops facilitated by SALISES faculty, site visits and experiential learning opportunities at local and national justice-based organizations.

Kingston, Jamaica – Human & Developmental Services

Led by Andrea Rutherford and Loris Bennett, and in collaboration with faculty from UTech, participants will attend a child and youth developmental services conference at UTech. They will also participate in volunteering and experiential learning projects at local community organizations that support young children and families including Mustard Seed Communities and the STEP Centre (School for Therapy, Education and Parenting of Children with Multiple Disabilities). Throughout the program, students will examine and learn in-depth about approaches in Jamaica to supporting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  

Students from all FSCS programs are welcome to apply and participate in this year’s faculty-led programs abroad. Participants will be supported by faculty-leads and the Global Learning Assistant throughout pre-departure, abroad, and re-entry, and may be eligible to receive an International Mobility Bursary in support of their experience.
