Insurance coverage is funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. This includes students whose field placement agencies are WSIB participants as well as for students whose agencies are covered by private insurance.
Students are expected to work safely at all times and participate in and implement all safety-related training and procedures provided by the Placement Employer and Humber. Students must sign and the Student Declaration of Understanding and complete the Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Training in advance of staring placement. Hosting agencies must complete Humber’s Letter to Placement Employer and indicate whether the placement organization is covered by Workplace Safety and Insurance Act or with a private insurer; this form will remain on file and need only be updated if there are any changes make to the insurance method checked on the form. If the student is being paid by the Placement Employer, the student is considered to be an employee of the Placement Employer and therefore, not covered by the Ministry in the event of an accident or illness.
In the event of placement workplace injury, illness or accident, students and agencies are to inform the Field Placement Coordinator immediately; students have 24 hours to document and submit a report of the incident to Humber Health and Safety by following the steps outlined in their Field Experience Guide. The Field Placement Coordinator will implement the reporting and follow-up process outlined in the Policy Manual for Workplace Safety and Insurance Coverage for Students on Unpaid Work Placements, as well as coordinate a student’s return to placement in consultation with Health and Safety Services.
There is personal accident insurance arranged by the Humber Student Federation, Ignite that minimally covers all students, including those placed at privately insured agencies. Students who wish to acquire personal accident insurance should purchase their own, as well as make inquiries as to the limits of the Ignite’s insurance.
