Placement Course Failure

Students who have failed a field placement course, will sit out for a period of rustication before they will be allowed to resume in a field placement. This period of time is a minimum of one term, but possibly more depending on the program progression, course availability and nature of the failure. When field placement and integrative seminar are offered as co-requisites, a failure in one course will require the student to repeat both courses. All instances of field placement course failure will involve the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor providing a Placement Assessment to the Program Coordinator and in some cases, Placements and Partnerships Manager.

Factors that may lead to failure of a Field Placement Course are as follows:

  1. Academic misconduct in the field setting
  2. Termination by the Placement Employer/Placement Supervisor
  3. Poor attendance
  4. Incomplete, late or missing placement documentation
  5. Poor evaluation from the Placement Supervisor
  6. Incomplete hours by the end of the term
  7. Leaving or “quitting” placement

Academic Misconduct

Academic Misconduct is broadly defined as an offence against the academic integrity of the learning environment. Misrepresenting information regarding a placement, falsifying timesheets and evaluations as well as damage to the integrity of placement partnerships are considered to be Academic Misconduct. Humber Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with and abiding by the policy on student and academic integrity as well as the section on Academic Misconduct in the 2019-2020 Admissions and Academic Regulations.

Termination by the Placement Employer

Should an agency determine that a student is unable to fulfill or act in alignment with their professional responsibilities and/or the terms of the learning contact, the Placement Supervisor/Employer can terminate the placement. Seminar Instructors/Faculty Advisors will connect with both the student and agency to gather information to conduct a Placement Assessment related to the termination and advise the Program Coordinator. Students should continue attending Seminar Class unless advised otherwise by the Program Coordinator.

Poor attendance (late, absent)

Students who are going to be late or absent from placement must advise their Placement Supervisor and Seminar Instructor/Faculty Supervisor immediately with as much notice as possible. It is at the discretion of the agency to terminate a placement if there are frequent issues with attendance.

Incomplete, late or missing placement documentation

All documentation and assignments are due at the end of the placement term. Please see the “Placement Extensions UNS and INC Grades” section of this manual for further information.

Poor evaluation from the Placement Supervisor

Students are encouraged to seek regular feedback from their Placement Supervisor and share any concerns with their Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor early on and throughout the term. Unprofessional behaviour, poor application of theory to practice and/or lack of actualization of the Learning Contract may result in a poor mid-Term and/or final evaluation.

Incomplete hours by the end of the term

Students should make arrangements with their Placement Supervisor and Seminar Instructor/Faculty Supervisor to make up any hours missed before the end of the term. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all Field Placement hours are completed within the set term as defined at the time of confirmation. Please see the “Placement Extensions UNS and INC Grades” section of this manual for further information.

Quitting Placement

Students who stop attending placement without consultation with their Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor and approval from their Program Coordinator will be considered to have failed placement. Students will not be able to re-enter the field until the following semester and must satisfy the conditions set by the Program Coordinator. Please see the “Re-Entering the Field after a Placement Course Failure” section for more information.
