Student Rights

All Humber community members have rights that are protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code as well as the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These rights are subject to limitations as described by law and some acceptable in a public place may not be appropriate in certain contexts in an institution of higher education or with workplaces which host placement students.

Students have a right to have these placement practices and procedures, as well as Humber College policies and procedures adhered to, in order to ensure an ethical, positive and optimal learning environment based on procedural fairness and academic integrity.

Students have a right to procedural fairness in the investigation and determination of responsibility as it relates to placement practices. These rights include:

  1. The right to a fair placement matching process that is based on student qualifications, experience, agency needs and timely submission of completed and required documentation.
  2. The right to a fair hearing including being made aware of and given an opportunity to respond to, correct or contradict any evidence available, in person and/or in writing.
  3. The right to appeal based on the conditions explained in the “Appealing Placement Termination and/or Failed Placement Course” section of this guide.
  4. The right to have an advisor or support person of their choice present at any hearing or meeting, if desired.
