In unionized environments, it is not uncommon for strikes to occur. The following guidelines have been established in the event that an agency is affected by a strike while hosting an FSCS student:
Students will not commence a placement or will not continue their placement when a strike is in progress if either of the following conditions exists:
The Placement Supervisor is responsible for notifying the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Supervisor or Field Placement Coordinator as soon as a strike potential exists. In the event of a strike students will not be expected to cross picket lines.
Student who miss placement due to strikes will be given the opportunity to make up lost time. Where the strike is expected to last or has lasted such that making up hours is not feasible, the FSCS Representative will provide students with an alternative plan to accrue placement hours.
It is not uncommon for local Municipal Health services to temporarily close nursing homes and hospitals to non-essential staff in response to an outbreak. In the case of an outbreak, students will not be expected to attend placement until advised otherwise by their Placement Supervisor. In the event of an outbreak, students should inform their Seminar Instructor/Faculty Supervisor immediately for assistance in crafting an opportunity to make up any lost time.
On days with inclement weather, students are advised to allow extra time for safe travel to placement. Students who believe the roadways to be unsafe due to severe ice or snow should call and email their Placement Employer and Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor if the decision is to not attend the placement shift. Arrangements should be made by students with the Placement Employer and the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor to make up lost time by either scheduling shifts or completing an approved project.
If the Placement workplace is closed due to inclement weather, students are not expected to attend placement that day and can still claim those hours as long as they were in attendance for their regularly scheduled shift before and after the day of the closure. In the event a College/Campus closure is announced, students are still expected to attend placement if the placement workplace is open.
