The Goal of Placement

Programs that have field placement provide students with an opportunity to integrate classroom learning in a practical and professional capacity, supported by Faculty and the community. Placements can be paid or unpaid, depending on the program and available opportunities. The purpose of field placement as part of an academic program is to deepen theoretical knowledge through practical application and evaluation. Unlike voluntary or paid work experience which students might undertake on their own, field placements are a formalized, required part of an academic program and therefore, must be aligned, approved and facilitated through the College. The emphasis is on learning and the application of theory; this learning is intended to provide the student with the skills necessary for future employment.

Placement opportunities are competitive and as such, students will be required to develop a resume, send professional email communication and utilize interview skills in order to secure a position that will meet the requirements of their program of study. Students are expected to work with their Field Placement Coordinator to secure field placements before the deadlines set for each program or may risk delaying graduation and paying additional course fees.

In order to graduate from a program of study that has a field placement component, students will need to successfully complete field courses as they would regular academic courses within the semester.
