Extending Placement Beyond the Semester

Placements confirmed by the College are for a specific number of hours as well as set start and end dates in which the field placement occurs. Students attending unpaid placements are insured in the case of an accident or injury during this pre-arranged timeframe. In cases where circumstances are beyond the control of the student and result in missing time in placement, the student can request to extend their placement past the end of the semester. The Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor will note the new end date and number of hours in writing to the Placement Employer so as to extend insurance coverage, as well as supervision. Extensions granted by the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor should not exceed two (2) weeks beyond the end of the semester; extensions longer than two (2) weeks will require approval from the Placements and Partnerships Manager.

Circumstances in which Placement semesters may be extended:

  • A limited number of sick days and/or emergency
  • Religious holidays
  • The agency experienced a temporary closure (outbreak, lockdown, staffing change etc.) or shortage of hours for shifts
  • Conflict with mandatory school/class events
  • Reasonable delay resulting from an approved placement change
  • Recommendation from ALS Consultant as part of the accommodation plan
  • Missed days as a result of deregistration
  • Agency strike
  • Jury Duty
  • Military Service
  • Death of an immediate family member

Circumstances in which Placement semesters are not extended:

  • Conflict with personal work schedule
  • Vacation
  • Child care
  • Delay in confirming and starting placement after an approved placement change
  • Poor performance in placement
  • Quitting of termination from placement
  • If less than 75% of placement hours will have been completed by the end of the semester
