Roles and Responsibilities

Students

All students have a responsibility to be aware of the placement practices and procedures outlined in this manual as well as their program specific Field Experience Guides. Where these practices and procedures are violated and not resolvable informally, formal processes will be engaged. Prior to starting a placement with an employer, students must receive written approval from the Field Placement Coordinator and confirm their placement details. Students are also responsible to be aware of and working in accordance with the polices of the Placement Employer. Where agency policy is in contradiction with the practices, procedures and polies of Humber and the FSCS, students are advised to check with their Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor.

Field Placement Coordinator/Field Placement Advisor

The role of the Field Placement Coordinator (also referred to as Field Placement Advisor) is to guide and administer the field placement process for students and Placement Employers up until the first day of placement. Students require approval in writing from the College via the Field Placement Coordinator/Field Advisor before they can begin attending placement. In the event of an accident or injury in an unpaid placement, the Field Placement Coordinator will guide the student and Placement Employer in the reporting procedures connected to the approved placement.

Seminar Instructors/ Faculty Advisors

The role of the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor is to be the primary liaison for Placement Supervisors and support the integration of classroom learning for students once they are in the field. Performance related concerns are investigated, assessed and resolved by the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor. Seminar Instructors/Faculty Advisors facilitate the resolution of placement issues and support student success by creating placement completion plans if extensions are required. Evaluations and grades are assigned by the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor at the end of the semester.

Program Coordinators

The role of the Program Coordinator is to provide direction and support to students in completing their program of study. Where a placement concern has been assessed by the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor, the Program Coordinator will consult with the Field Placement Coordinator and direct next steps for the student in course completion.

Placement Supervisor

The role of the Placement Supervisor is to help students actualize the application of their course learning goals in the field by providing mentorship, feedback and completing paperwork such as timesheets and formal evaluations. They are responsible for informing students of Agency policy and liaising with the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Supervisor or FSCS Representative regarding any concerns or challenges during placement.

Placement Employer

The role of the Placement Employer is to provide placement students with the environment and supervision to practice and work toward their course specific learning goals. All employers have a responsibility to ensure students are working in a safe environment and to communicate to FSCS Representatives what preparation is needed to support and facilitate this (see Appendix A).

Accessible Learning Services Consultants

ALS Consultants assess needs and provide recommendations to students and FSCS Representatives regarding individualized accommodations for students before and/or during their field placement. Changing placements or extending the placement term is done in collaboration with the ALS Consultant where applicable.

FSCS Global Learning Assistant

The FSCS Global Learning Assistant arranges Placement Abroad, international exchanges and international partnerships for students and faculty.

FSCS Field Placement Preparation Officer

The FSCS Documentation Officer is responsible for the communication, facilitation and collection of pre-placement documentation for programs in the FSCS.

Associate Dean

While the Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor report to the Associate Dean, direction regarding all field placement issues that require escalation are directed to and by the Placements and Partnerships Manager.

Placements and Partnerships Manager

Ensures that Field Placement Coordinators and other employees working with Field Placement in the FSCS follow the guidelines put forth in this document. Students are encouraged to bring concerns regarding placement directly to their Field Placement Coordinator and/or Seminar Instructor/Faculty Advisor as a first step; in the event that a resolution has not been found, students can contact the Placements and Partnerships Manager for a formal resolution. Misconduct as it relates to the field, students seeking formal decisions on Appeals and Grade Review for field placement courses are to refer to the Placements and Partnerships Manager. PLAR applications for field courses and placement abroad opportunities are approved by the Placements and Partnerships Manager.

Dean or Representative

Students can petition to the Dean in the event they wish to challenge the outcome of the Appeal as decided by the Placements and Partnerships Manager.
